Healthy Risk Is Critical To Natural Child Development

The school wanted a challenging play item that promotes both challenge and risk...

eibe Play was approached by the school in 2021 to provide some ideas as to how they can improve their play within their Junior school grounds. Their current play equipment offering exists of a low-balancing trail and sports field. However, the school wanted to enhance this by providing a play item that promotes risk and challenge.

We conducted a free design consultation and recommended that our new Tough Trail range has a unique design inspired by the popular obstacle course TV shows Ninja Warrior and Total Wipeout. These new elements give older kids the challenges they crave that traditional play equipment does not, ensuring they stay excited about play and being active as they grow bigger and older.

The school loved the idea as they were looking for a challenging play item that promotes both challenge and risk and encourages the school children to solve problems and push themselves as they move around it. Another critical factor for the school was playing at height, which offers unique play opportunities that are continuous so that children don’t need to get off to move on to the next section. The unit works perfectly for this and has many ascents and descents, allowing this if required.

The Play Unit is made from durable, quality manufactured softwood pine, and each post goes into the ground on a galvanised steel foot. It is designed to challenge the user, whilst promoting critical development skills such as hand-eye coordination, balancing and lower-body coordination. All of which are vital for a healthy child’s development.

The installation of this item was planned to take place during the school’s summer holiday to avoid any disruption to the school. The work went very successfully and was completed on time. The school decided to include a bonded mulch surface with wet pour graphics. These were designed to be as natural looking as possible to help them blend into the school’s natural surroundings.
