The atmosphere of the white room, its comfortable recliners, the light spots of the mirrored ball that illuminate the room like stars, the coloured bubbles in the bubble columns, and the soft relaxing music invite the visitors of snoezelen rooms to unwind and enjoy a stimulation of their various senses. Snoezelen, developed in the Netherlands originally as a leisure activity for people with mental handicaps, is becoming increasingly popular with educationalists for its highly relaxing effect. This is no wonder because today, it is not only people with handicaps who suffer from sensory overload. Even children react with jumpiness and concentration deficits to a world that has so little room for idleness. The book provides a comprehensive, competent presentation of the snoezelen concept: Everything you need to know about room design, targets and methodology, basic knowledge of relaxation and perception, information on the effects of colours, smells and music, imaginative relaxation stories, and new games and materials addressing all the senses. Among therapists, the term snoezelen has long been a synonym for relaxed sensual perception in a relaxed atmosphere. The term 'snoezelen', pronounced snuz?l?n, is a neologism formed from the Dutch words "doezelen? (dozing) and "snuffelen" (to sniff, explore). "Doezelen" stands for relaxation; "snuffelen" is not only sniffing but all areas of perception, i.e. seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and probing.
