Green Shoots Day Nursery was opened in April 2004 under the Neighbourhood Nursery Initiative, with funding being received from New Opportunities Fund Building Neighbourhood Nurseries Programme and the Lottery Fund. It is set in the grounds of Studley Green Primary School has been managed by Bath YMCA since May 2010.
Green Shoots plays an important part in the local community. Childcare is of an exceptional standard and an innovative staff team constantly strive to introduce new play based activities. With the help of Deputy Head of Sure Start, Gill Hanlan, Heather and Mike Fairbeard, Chief Executive of the YMCA, visited eibe’s exhibition of furniture at Trowbridge Early Years Department, hoping to find some suitable replacement chairs and tables for the nursery; the existing ones were dated and of poor quality.
Working with a budget of £2,000, eibe aimed to deliver the right solution, promising high quality products that catered for the differing heights of the children. The furniture and storage items had to be very robust and complement the setting. Time was also of the essence, in order to qualify for the relevant funding.
A quotation was produced extremely quickly, the offer accepted and the brand new furniture delivered soon after. The transformation was immediate and Susan Mayell, Deputy Manager explained,
‘‘We changed our furniture as it was brightly coloured. We wanted neutral furniture as it does not over-stimulate the children. We have de-sensitized the environment for the children; this has made a huge impact as they are now much calmer and not overwhelmed with colour. The tables and chairs are the correct heights for the children and accessible for all. Our carers now sit at the same level as the children, which has made interaction much better.’’
