Our Design Approach
We worked closely with the client throughout the design process to develop a bespoke scheme that maximised play value within the available footprint. Our final design provides a carefully balanced mix of physical, social and imaginative play opportunities, ensuring the play area caters for a wide range of ages and abilities. We also added a series of personal touches to the design, inspired by the area's local character and significant features. These included the arches of the Wetherby bridge, the Wetherby Market stall and Fish n Chip Shop, and the River Wharfe with its water wheel.
Sightlines, circulation and inclusivity were key considerations, allowing carers to supervise easily while ensuring children can move confidently around the space. We selected equipment in vibrant colours with themed surfacing for Sandringham Park, creating a play environment that feels welcoming, cohesive and well connected to its surroundings. The layout also encourages shared play experiences, helping children build confidence, cooperation and communication skills.
Play Features
The completed play area incorporates a variety of play equipment designed to support key aspects of child development. Climbing, balancing, and agility-based elements promote strength, coordination and positive risk-taking, while dynamic features such as swings and rotating items encourage movement and sensory engagement.
We also integrated opportunities for imaginative and social play through interactive elements that invite children to play together, role-play and create their own games. Inclusive design principles were embedded throughout the scheme, ensuring children of different abilities can access and enjoy the space together. The main play unit has wheelchair accessible platforms with sensory play features. Accessible surfacing, thoughtfully designed equipment and generous spacing between items help ensure the play area is welcoming to all users.
Installation & Quality
Our experienced installation team delivered the project efficiently, with minimal disruption to the park and the surrounding community. All equipment and surfacing fully comply with BS EN 1176 and relevant safety standards, providing peace of mind for the client and ensuring long-term performance.
The finished play area is robust, low-maintenance, and designed to withstand heavy use, making it a sustainable investment for the local authority.
