Community Cheers as Local Youth Inspires New Inclusive Play Area in Wellesley Estate

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when studying from home became the new normal, A local community member Dylan found a captivating project: designing a new community play area in the newly developed Wellesley estate. Envisioning a space that could be enjoyed by all, including those in wheelchairs, Dylan dove into research, exploring local play environments and potential suppliers.

With his initial design complete, he shared his vision with his mother, discussing its unique aspects. Not content with just imagining possibilities, Dylan pushed to present his plan to the local council and Grainger PLC, hoping to see his ideas come to life on the expansive greens adjacent to his residence.

Wellesley, a fresh neighbourhood nestled in Hampshire's countryside, was emerging from Aldershot's historic military barracks, now repurposed as modern homes surrounded by large open areas. The timing was perfect, as Grainger PLC was required to expand existing recreational spaces to foster community engagement. Dylan’s proposals were thus integral to consultations with potential suppliers, outlining local desires for the recreational space.

In early 2020, eibe Play installed several play structures in the area’s initial developmental phase, including innovative items like the Kamet Play Unit and Lilly Jumping Plates. Given eibe Play’s prior installations and strong reputation, Grainger PLC engaged them to tailor Dylan’s concept into a fully articulated design aimed at transforming the area into a cherished community hub.

eibe Play embraced the task with enthusiasm, crafting a playground that aligned with their mission and responded to the community’s aspirations, as Dylan initially envisioned. They aimed to create a year-round accessible space promoting both physical and social skills for children aged 2-14, ensuring inclusion for every visitor, regardless of ability.

A wetpour surface was selected to guarantee durability and accessibility, which is essential for a venue welcoming both wheelchairs and strollers. The play equipment, featuring soft and hardwood on sturdy metal bases, was chosen from eibe Play’s diverse collections, enhancing the tactile experience of the area.

Key features included the Gemma Play Unit, catering to children 5-14, with various climbing routes, slides, and an accessible panel area. For younger visitors, the Kamet Toddler Multi-play unit offered an exploratory climbing and sliding experience. The diverse arrangement also featured the eibe Play Stand Up Seesaw and an Inclusive Roundabout, complemented by a parkour-style Tough Trail course designed for 8-14 year-olds fostering agility and balance.

The site also included hard-standing seating areas for gatherings and sensory play options like musical chimes, enriching the experience for all ages and abilities. The grand opening was a community spectacle, welcoming 200 special guests who celebrated the unveiling with enthusiasm, marked by Dylan cutting the ribbon to cheers and a rush of children eager to explore the new facilities. Free ice cream and goodie bags added to the festive spirit.

The local community expressed overwhelming approval on social media, applauding the new addition to their community. With a promising start, eibe Play looks forward to nurturing a lasting partnership with Grainger PLC and the local residents, ensuring the play area remains a beloved hub for future generations.
