This space was set to be developed utilising a large, repurposed agricultural barn. The project's specifications required the design to cater primarily to children up to 10 years old, aiming to facilitate the development of strength, coordination, social skills and problem-solving skills, all while ensuring an enjoyable experience. It was crucial that the space be accessible and inclusive, enabling children with various abilities to play alongside each other, as Attwell Farm is a prominent regional attraction for children with special needs.
In response to these requirements, Iain Etridge, our Play consultant, and Ashley Pink, our Play Designer, crafted a unique and welcoming indoor sand play area in collaboration with the Attwell team, making adjustments as needed to thoroughly meet the park's specific needs. The thematic design of the play area revolved around maritime adventures, featuring the 'Santa Maria,' our largest pirate ship model. This centrepiece offers extensive playful activities such as climbing, balancing, sliding, and a range of imaginative play options encompassing five different ascents, a traverse wall, a 'sea serpent' balance beam, two sand play walls, a sand digger, and several ocean-themed play panels.
A key component of the play area's design is the inclusion of a significant, wheelchair-accessible sand play unit within the sand pit. This unit is equipped with several interactive elements, including play panels, pulleys, sieves, and buckets, all accessible with a 1:12 inclined slope for wheelchair convenience.
The play area was officially opened to the public on July 20, 2024, and quickly received positive reviews from visitors. The inclusive design and thoughtfulness in ensuring accessibility for all children were particularly appreciated by the visitors, contributing to the overall enthusiasm and love for the new amenity. The Managing Director of Attwell Farm expressed immense satisfaction with the project, noting it as a critical enhancement to their range of play activities, particularly for visitors with special needs, who found it easily accessible and also genuinely delightful and engaging.
