Play on the Way: Where Every Step Becomes Play

In 2025, eibe Play was appointed by Worcester City Council to deliver an ambitious project that would reimagine a section of the Cotswold Way footpath as an interactive, inclusive play experience. Named “Play on the Way,” the initiative set out to encourage families, children, and young people to engage more actively with the natural environment while promoting health, wellbeing, and community connection.

The vision was to transform a traditional walking route into a playful journey—one that invites exploration, movement, and social interaction at every stage. Working closely with the council, eibe’s design team developed a carefully considered scheme of six play zones positioned along the route, each offering a distinct experience while contributing to a cohesive overall concept.

A key design principle was inclusivity. The play spaces were created to cater to a wide range of ages and abilities, ensuring that everyone—from young children to teenagers and those with limited mobility—could participate and enjoy the experience. This inclusive approach is evident not only in the choice of equipment but also in the layout, accessibility, and flow between zones.

To enhance the sense of journey and connection, the play zones are linked by a series of educational thermographic markings embedded directly into the pathway. These vibrant graphics introduce playful prompts, learning opportunities, and interactive elements that encourage users to move between zones, extending play beyond the equipment itself and into the landscape.

Sustainability and sensitivity to the local environment were also central to the project. All play equipment was manufactured using FSC-certified Robinia hardwood, a highly durable and naturally resilient material known for its organic appearance. This ensures the installations blend seamlessly with the surrounding setting while offering long-term performance with minimal maintenance. Wet pour safety surfacing was used throughout to provide a safe, accessible, and durable play environment in all weather conditions.

Play Zones Overview:

  • Zone 1 – Welcome and Discovery
The first zone introduces visitors to the concept of Play on the Way with balance boulders and interactive play panels. These elements encourage coordination, imaginative play, and sensory engagement, creating an inviting starting point for the journey.
  • Zone 2 – Climb and Challenge
A dynamic, multi-use climbing structure forms the centrepiece of this zone. Featuring a variety of ascent routes and integrated monkey bars, it challenges users physically while supporting strength, agility, and confidence-building.
  • Zone 3 – Social and Creative Space
Designed with older children and teenagers in mind, this zone provides a relaxed “chill-out” area. A performance platform encourages social interaction, creative expression, and informal gatherings, all set beneath existing tree cover that offers natural shade and shelter.
  • Zone 4 – Inclusive Play in Action
This area combines balance steps with a wheelchair-accessible trampoline, ensuring that children of all abilities can play side by side. It exemplifies the project’s commitment to inclusive, shared experiences.
  • Zone 5 – Movement and Balance
A continuation of balance-focused play, this zone develops coordination and physical confidence through a series of engaging elements that encourage movement and progression.
  • Zone 6 – Active Play Finale
The final zone features a large landscaped mound with a double-width embankment slide, creating an exciting destination point. This high-energy space invites repeated use and group play, providing a memorable conclusion to the route.
  • Connecting the Journey
Throughout the pathway, educational thermographic markings act as both wayfinding tools and playful interventions. These graphics inspire curiosity, incorporate learning themes, and encourage users to stay active as they travel between zones.

The completed Play on the Way installation has been enthusiastically received by Worcester City Council and the local community. By combining innovative design, inclusive play principles, and environmentally sensitive materials, the project successfully transforms a simple footpath into a vibrant, engaging destination.

More than just a series of play areas, Play on the Way is a connected experience—one that promotes outdoor activity, supports social interaction, and enhances the natural landscape. It stands as a lasting investment in community wellbeing, offering a space that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors for many years to come.
