Design Inspired by the Coast
The play scheme draws heavily on the natural and cultural identity of The Mumbles, with a strong oyster and coastal theme reflected throughout.
Sculptural timber forms, inspired by oyster shells and wave patterns, create a visually distinctive landscape. Layered climbing structures echo the organic shapes of shells, while curved forms and flowing lines mirror the movement of the sea. A palette of blues, greens, and natural timber tones reinforces this connection to the coastal environment.
Vertical timber posts, reminiscent of sea grasses or coastal markers, are used throughout the space to create rhythm, movement, and a strong visual identity along the promenade.
A Landscape for Play
Rather than creating a traditional, enclosed playground, the design integrates play seamlessly into the promenade itself.
A series of landscaped mounds form the foundation of the play space, softening the edge of the sea wall and introducing changes in level. These mounds provide:
- Natural climbing opportunities
- Informal seating and gathering points
- A dynamic play experience that encourages movement
An embankment slide is built directly into the mound, offering a fast, exciting descent while maintaining a low visual impact and blending into the landscape.
Accessible routes, including graded paths and stepped access with rope supports, ensure that the space can be navigated by a wide range of users.
Play Features
The scheme combines sculptural design with varied play value:
Climbing & Exploration
- Bespoke oyster-inspired climbing structures with integrated handholds, encouraging strength, coordination, and problem-solving
- Layered forms offering multiple routes and levels of challenge
Balancing & Movement
- A robinia balance trail featuring stepping posts, beams, and rope elements
- Designed for progressive challenge and suitable for a wide age range
Dynamic Play
- Stainless steel embankment slide integrated into the landscape
- Open-ended mounding for running, rolling, and free play
Informal & Social Play
- Sculptural elements that double as seating and gathering points
- Open spaces that encourage social interaction and family use
Inclusive and Intergenerational Design
The promenade setting naturally attracts a wide demographic, and the play space reflects this.
The design supports:
- Informal, “on-the-go” play for children moving along the promenade
- Shared experiences between children, parents, and carers
- Varied challenge levels, ensuring accessibility for different abilities
The open layout avoids barriers and encourages everyone to engage with the space in their own way—whether actively playing, supervising, or simply enjoying the environment.
Built for the Coastal Environment
The exposed seafront location required a robust and durable solution.
Materials and construction were carefully selected to withstand:
- Salt-laden air and moisture
- High winds and coastal weather conditions
- Heavy footfall and year-round use
The use of high-quality timber, stainless steel, and durable surfacing ensures longevity while maintaining a natural, high-end aesthetic.
Enhancing the Promenade Experience
The integration of play into the sea defence scheme transforms the promenade from a purely functional space into a vibrant public destination.
The play elements:
- Encourage longer dwell times for families and visitors
- Add visual interest and identity to the seafront
- Support local tourism and business activity
- Create a welcoming, family-friendly environment
A Lasting Community Asset
The completed Mumbles Promenade play scheme has been warmly received by the local community, quickly becoming a well-used and valued destination.
By combining infrastructure, landscape, and play, the project demonstrates how coastal defence works can deliver far greater value—creating spaces that are not only resilient, but also engaging, inclusive, and full of life.
